Jeremy Hunt: New Lewisham ward 'not A&E lite'
Jeremy Hunt's announcement that Lewisham Hospital's A&E department will stay open but in a downgraded form has received public criticism from campaigners and even a Conservative colleague.
The decision is part of a plan to deal with a debt of £150m at the neighbouring South London NHS Trust.
Asked if it would be fair to call the new ward "A&E lite", he said "No, it is an A&E".
BBC London's political correspondent, Karl Mercer, reports.
This report features Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt, Labour MP for Lewisham East Heidi Alexander, Conservative MP for Beckenham Bob Stewart, Julia Manning of Health 2020 and Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock.
