Newham Council wants to add to its 959 CCTV cameras

Newham Council has 959 CCTV cameras but it says it wants more.

The east London borough has more CCTV cameras than Liverpool and Birmingham combined, and possibly the most of any local authority in England.

The council said residents were concerned about crime and anti-social behaviour, and claimed CCTV could help combat that.

Police figures show of the 32,809 recorded crimes in Newham in 2012 only 240 arrests resulted from Newham CCTV cameras.

BBC London's Political Editor Tim Donovan reports.
