Hackney cycling capital of London

The London borough of Hackney has more people commuting to work by bike than any other area in Britain, new figures show.

The London School of Hygiene, which carried out the research, said about 15% of all commuters were cyclists.

Dr Anna Goodman said Hackney's environment was partly responsible for the increased popularity in cycling.

London Cycling Campaign's Charlie Lloyd said it took a lot of political will to make the area's roads safer while Andrew Gilligan, the London Cycling Commissioner, admitted road safety was a work in progress.
