Tube trial: Why standing-only escalators are quicker

A recent experiment on the London Underground (LU) proved that standing-only escalators are more efficient resulting in a 27% increase in capacity.

Prof Ed Galea of Greenwich University has researched escalator etiquette and said if everyone stands “you get a higher through-put”.

Speaking to 5Live Breakfast, he said in China and Shanghai "virtually no one walks up the escalator" because they know that more people will get through.
