Broccoli research brings hope for arthritis victims

Scientists have discovered a compound in broccoli which they think could slow down or even prevent the spread of osteoarthritis.

Researchers at the University of East Anglia have spent the past four years examining the chemical make-up of the vegetable.

They have found the compound sulforaphane which they think could be the key to slowing or even halting the disease which affects about 8.5m people in the UK.

The team is starting human trials, asking 20 patients to eat a daily dose of "super-charged" broccoli.
