Blakeney seal colony: Norfolk reserve records record-breaking pup numbers

A record-breaking number of seal pups have been recorded at Blakeney Point reserve in north Norfolk with more than 1,756 new arrivals - up on the total figures for the 2013-14 breeding by nearly 200.

Seals have been pupping on the National Trust reserve for more than a decade.

Ajay Tegala, one of the coastal rangers responsible for counting the seals, said: "The bulls develop a harem of up to six cows, based on their age, strength and fighting ability... and the seals mate again soon after giving birth."

The colony is being filmed by the BBC's Winterwatch this weekend for the new series in January.
