Philip Pullman's Ruby in the Smoke to make bookshop stage debut

Last-minute preparations have been made for the first stage adaptation of Philip Pullman's novel The Ruby in the Smoke.

It will make its stage debut in a rather unusual location though - Blackwell's bookshop in Oxford.

The bestselling author will be in the audience on Wednesday evening as the play starts its tour.

He said he wanted to write a "Victorian melodrama", inspired by "every penny dreadful written between 1837 and 1901".
