New Goldthorpe shop hopes to halt food poverty

A shop described as Britain's "first" social supermarket has opened in South Yorkshire, selling low-cost food to people facing food poverty.

Community Shop, in Goldthorpe, near Barnsley, sells surplus goods that cannot be sold in supermarkets.

Shoppers will have to have membership cards, which are being issued to 500 families living close by and who are on means-tested benefits.

The food sold at the Community Shop comes from goods with packaging faults, produce which has been overstocked and seasonal items.
