Backlash over MP's Sheffield sauce comments

An MP has faced a backlash after suggesting Sheffield's Henderson's Relish was an attempt to imitate Worcestershire Sauce.

Speaking in the House of Commons on the need to curb "parasitic packaging" Jim Dowd, the Labour MP Lewisham West and Penge, said he had never heard of the condiment, which has been made in Sheffield for more than 100 years.

His comments have sparked criticism on social media and prompted Deputy Prime Minister and Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg to speak out in defence of the sauce, describing it as "a much loved local institution".
