Walberswick to Southwold ferry service gets new boat

Work has started on a building a new ferry for a famous passenger crossing.

The crossing between Walberswick and Southwold in Suffolk, takes people across the River Blyth and saves walkers a mile-long trip inland to the footbridge.

It will be the first new ferry for 20 years. It is being built at the International Boat Building Training College in Lowestoft.

The ferry service has been operated by the same Suffolk family since 1885 for five generations.

Daniella Church, the current operator said: "My old boat, Old Bob, is getting a little bit past it - she's about 50-something years old now and I felt it was time to replace her with a new boat."
