Hastings Pier is 'leading example' of regeneration

Hastings Pier in East Sussex has been hailed as a leading example of regeneration by campaigners.

Trade association Co-operatives UK said some of Britain's oldest piers were at risk from rising maintenance and insurance costs.

Up to 95% of Hastings Pier was burnt out in an October 2010 arson attack following years of neglect.

It has been returned to local ownership in advance of a £14m project to bring it back to its former glory.

The BBC spoke to Jess Steele, the report's author, and Simon Opie, of Hastings Pier Charity.
