Lewes Prison officer fears 'danger' over staff shortage

A serving officer from Lewes Prison has said she fears a member of staff could be killed unless action is taken to address a shortage of staff.

Kim Lennon said she and her colleagues were so overstretched they could not meet the needs of prisoners, which is causing major friction on the wings.

Ms Lennon said the smuggling of drugs is rife and the wings "resemble a war zone".

The Prison Service denied that staffing levels were unsafe and said there was a "zero-tolerance approach" to illicit substances.
