Wakehurst Place gardens devastated by the Great Storm

More than 20,000 trees were destroyed at Wakehurst Place near Ardingly in Sussex when the Great Storm struck in 1987.

Winds reached 115mph in the South East, in the early hours of 16 October.

The estate, owned by the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, had mature gardens, with woodlands dominated by dense tree and shrub planting - but within hours, all that had changed.
