Generating wind power for 20 years

The first wind turbines in the North East began generating power 20 years ago.

On 14 May 1993, nine turbines along the harbour wall at Blyth in Northumberland were the pioneers.

Between them they produced less electricity than just one of the modern turbines now springing up in the North East countryside.

But the giants seen today are minnows compared to the offshore turbines soon to be sited off the North East coast.

That next generation is being tested where it all started, in Blyth.
