World War One At Home: The soldiers who dug deep

As part of the World War One At Home project carried out in partnership between the BBC and Imperial War Museums, Gerry Jackson explores the traces of practice trenches dug in Northumberland by Army recruits as they waited to be sent overseas.

High on the moors, the men experienced their first taste of war.

The Army bought 20,000 acres near Otterburn just before World War One and the soldiers were taken there to be toughened up.

They also dug in public parks and the grounds of stately homes as they were readied for battle.
