Mugged pensioner Alan Barnes collects keys to new home

A pensioner too afraid to live in his own home after being assaulted outside his front door has moved into a new house, bought with donations from people around the world.

Three days after Alan Barnes from Gateshead was attacked, beautician Katie Cutler set up an online fund to help him.

Donations quickly passed the intended £500 and were halted after more than £330,000 was pledged.

Twenty-five-year-old Richard Gatiss, from Split Crow Road, Gateshead, was jailed earlier this month for assaulting Mr Barnes.
