Martin McGuinness: "Gerry Adams' arrest is an attempt to influence elections"

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness has said the arrest of Gerry Adams is an attempt to influence the outcome of the elections in May.

Criticising the arrest of his party leader, he added that people within legal circles had said they believed Mr Adams could have answered police questions without the need to be arrested.

Mr Adams has spent the night in custody after going to Antrim police station, where he was arrested in connection with the 1972 murder of Jean McConville.
