Former Labour minister Peter Hain on the shadow cabinet

The 19 members of Ed Miliband's shadow cabinet have been announced with Yvette Cooper topping a secret ballot.

Her husband, Ed Balls, was also successful, along with Alan Johnson and Andy Burnham.

But other top figures in the previous government missed out, including Peter Hain , who was an early supporter of Ed Miliband in the leadership contest.

He gave his thoughts on the results to Newsnight's Gavin Esler.
