Ed Balls 'surprised' at shadow home secretary role

Ed Balls, who was tipped to become shadow chancellor, has been named shadow home secretary.

He told the BBC that he was "surprised but pleased" to be given the job in Ed Miliband's first shadow cabinet.

"It's a hugely important job and I am looking forward to doing it," he said.
