Work scheme for long-term jobless

People who have been claiming benefits long-term could have to take part in month-long manual labour projects, under government proposals.

Work and pensions secretary Iain Duncan Smith will outline plans for the community work placements as part of the Welfare Reform White Paper this week.

It is thought people refusing to take part or failing to turn up on time to work could have their Jobseekers' Allowance stopped for three months.
