Policing minister condemns student fee protest violence

Policing Minister Nick Herbert has condemned clashes on the fringes of Wednesday's protests against higher tuition fees. He said the responsibility lies solely with a small, hard-core group who were intent on violence.

In a statement to the Commons, Mr Herbert confirmed that 50 people had been arrested and said the police were committed to bringing those responsible to court.

Mr Herbert said the Metropolitan police would carry out a review, including examining why the trouble had not been anticipated, but he emphasised that officers were not to blame for the violence.
