Ex-MP David Chaytor is jailed over false expenses claims

The former Labour MP, David Chaytor is beginning an 18 month prison sentence after becoming the first politician to be jailed over the Westminster expenses scandal.

He submitted forged documents to try to claim more than £20,000 of taxpayers' money and had pleaded guilty to false accounting.

Sentencing him, the judge said the scandal had "shaken public confidence" in the political system. His lawyer said he was "full of remorse".
