Lib Dems fall to sixth place in Barnsley by-election

The Liberal Democrats fell to sixth place in Barnsley's by-election on Thursday.

The party which had secured second place in the last election, saw a defeat to the Labour Party with candidate Dan Jarvis winning the seat.

Lib Dem candidate Dominic Carman said his party had got a "good kicking" and said that the voters had registered their protest but that his party was trying to cut "the cancerous body of debt left by Labour".

The election was caused by the resignation of the former Labour MP, Eric Illsley, who pleaded guilty to falsely claiming £14,000 in parliamentary expenses.
