Guardian 'scaremongering' over uni places for rich

Conservative MP Nadhim Zahawi, who sits on the Business and Innovation and Skills Select Committee, accused the Guardian of "cynical scaremongering" over claims of richer students being able to buy a place at university.

Polly Toynbee said the idea of allowing some people to buy premium places at universities in England was "outrageous" and she claimed the government has since made a U-turn on the idea.

Their debate came after universities minister David Willetts said the government wanted to find ways to allow more flexibility over places, without damaging social mobility.
