Ken Clarke on Abu Qatada deportation from UK to Jordan

The Justice Secretary said it would be disappointing if the Jordanians failed to agree not to use evidence obtained by torture if Abu Qatada was sent there for a new trial.

Ken Clarke spoke as Home Secretary Theresa May was in Jordan for negotiations over the deportation of the cleric, who is under a 22-hour curfew in the UK.

He said no British court would deport anyone who faced torture, or a trial based on evidence based on torture, and he called for the Jordanians to give "credible assurances so he can go back".
