Andrew Mitchell resigns over Downing St police row

The Conservative Chief Whip has stood down from the job after weeks of speculation following a disputed exchange of words with a police officer outside Downing Street.

Andrew Mitchell had denied using the word "pleb" to an officer as he approached a security gate on his bike, but calls continued for his resignation.

He had met officers from the Police Federation last Friday.
