Ethnic minority MPs: Rushanara Ali and Alok Sharma

The only Bangladeshi MP at Westminster said there was much more that all political parties could do to get more women and people from ethnic minorities in Parliament.

Labour's Rushanara Ali said parties had a "responsibility to take control" as she debated with Alok Sharma MP, the Conservative vice chairman with responsibility for engagement with ethnic minority communities.

It came after the publication of a list of the 100 most prominent Bangladeshis in British public life, which had very few senior politicians. Abdal Ullah, who published the report, told Jo Coburn about the findings.

Liberal Democrat president Tim Farron reckoned that party's lack of ethnic minority MPs was down to it having no safe seats.
