Tatchell, Hughes on 30 years since Bermondsey by-election
Thirty years ago on Sunday the people of Bermondsey in south London went to the polls in one of the most bitter by-elections in British history.
It saw the Labour candidate Peter Tatchell lose out to the now deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats Simon Hughes, following a controversial campaign.
Mr Tatchell's homosexuality was ridiculed by his opponents and by some members of his own party and his home was attacked 30 times.
Eddie Mair spoke to the former rivals on BBC's Newsnight.
