Alan Johnson: 'First role of government is to protect'
Former Home Secretary Alan Johnson has warned of the difficulties of banning organisations and the use of the Prevent strategy in local communities.
Speaking on The Andrew Marr Show, Mr Johnson said one of the men arrested over the murder of an off-duty soldier in Woolwich had been part of an organisation, al-Muhajiroun, he had proscribed as Home Secretary in 2009.
Johnson also spoke of the need to use the Prevent programme run by the Home Office, which will be reviewed, saying "the first role of government is to protect its people" and this is "last place to look for savings".
