Damian McBride on the lessons his book offers Labour

Damian McBride's new book Power Trip, a memoir of his time as Gordon Brown's spin doctor, recounts infighting and media manipulation within the Labour Party in the run-up to former Prime Minister Tony Blair stepping down in 2007.

In it he claimed that he smeared Labour ministers including Charles Clarke and John Reid during Mr Brown's bid to succeed Mr Blair as prime minister. He says he was being loyal to Mr Brown, who was unaware of his actions.

In his first broadcast interview about the book he has spoken to BBC Newsnight about his motivation for writing it.

Damian McBride will be interviewed live on Newsnight by Jeremy Paxman on Monday 23 September 2013 at 10.30pm on BBC Two, or you can catch later on the BBC iPlayer or Newsnight website.
