Tory conference: Cameron for HS2 north south rail line

The HS2 high speed line is about bringing the "north and south together" according to the prime minister, who re-affirmed his backing for the controversial project during his speech to Conservative party conference.

Addressing delegates, he said Britain had been "too London-centric for far too long", and listed other engineering projects to get the "pistons firing in all parts of our country".

He said they would leave the 1970s-style socialism to others, as he told conference: "We are the party of the future."
