Dr Louise Irvine on National Health Action Party policy

Turning the NHS into a market was leading to transaction costs of up to £15bn annually paying for accountants, managers and lawyers, said a National Health Action Party election candidate in May's European elections.

Dr Louise Irvine - who is also a member of Keep Our NHS Public and chair of Save Lewisham Hospital Campaign - said that Labour had lost its way and had "brought in too much of the private sector" in to health services.

The GP said: "We are predicting that the destruction of a public provided and publicly-funded health care system is going to lead inexorably to people having to pay, because it will lead to a two-tier system."
