Resigning immigration minister Mark Harper 'acted honourably'

Immigration minister Mark Harper has "acted honourably" by resigning after discovering his cleaner did not have permission to work in the UK, Economic Secretary to the Treasury Nicky Morgan has said.

In his resignation letter to David Cameron, Mr Harper explained that he had first made checks on his cleaner in 2007 and again in 2012. His final checks came in 2013, after a focus on employers and landlords carrying out "reasonable checks" on workers.

Ms Harper told BBC News that he had "applied a higher standard to himself".
