Life as minister: Jeremy Browne and Michael Brown

Being sacked as a junior minister was "not the end of it" said a former Tory MP who listed colleagues who went on to have promotions under new party leaders.

Michael Brown, now a journalist, said his time working as a junior whip "counted for absolutely nothing" with his voters, who did not care that he carried out the role.

And he teased that any MP who was offered a junior minister role should take it to "know what drudgery a lot of it is", and he claimed the only qualifications for the roles were to be an MP who could read.

He debated the role of a minister with Lib Dem Jeremy Browne, who lost his his job in a reshuffle, after they watched a Daily Politics film on life as a minister.
