This is part of a series of clips from the BBC archives on the subject of the UK and the EU - this clip taken from BBC News, was first broadcast on 13 June 1994.

Under the stewardship of acting leader Margaret Beckett, Labour won 62 of the UK's 87 seats in the European Parliament in 1994.

By contrast, the Conservatives' share of the vote slipped drastically and they were left with just 18 MEPs.

The 1994 European election was also noteworthy for giving the Liberal Democrats, then led by Paddy Ashdown, its first two MEPs. The Scottish National Party also beat its previous electoral high water mark and won two MEPs.
