Norman Baker on emergency powers for data laws

A court judgement and legal uncertainty were behind the rush for new data laws that will be debated in Parliament next week, according to a Home Office Minister.

Norman Baker explained it was a re-instatement of existing powers, with new safeguards, and not a re-hashing of the Data Communications Bill, that was known as a Snoopers' Charter

Asked by Andrew Neil on the Daily Politics about the party's previous opposition to similar powers, he said Lib Dems have "long argued" for safeguards, and these have been successfully negotiated.
