Objections to Lord Hill appointment 'barrel-scraping'
MP Damian Green has come to the defence of Lord Hill as British Candidate for European Commissioner, describing objections to his appointment based on his former lobbyist profession as a "fairly barrel-scraping argument".
Lord Hill is to go before members of the European Parliament who will decide whether to approve his new role.
Speaking on the Today programme, the MP, who has been an associate of Lord Hill for a number of years, explained that objections to his appointment were unfounded:
"The whole European Union depends on compromise… so if left-wing MEPs say we're not going to have a centre-right commission then the whole system falls down."
First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Thursday 18 September.
