Tory conference: Hague on EU vote and UKIP defections

Only a Conservative government can deliver a referendum for the British people, says the leader of the House of Commons after two Tory MPs left the party for UKIP.

William Hague said a Labour government was the only alternative to a Tory government, and that party would not give people a vote on EU membership.

He spoke to Andrew Neil on the Sunday Politics about devolved powers for Scotland and the rest of the UK, and a survey of Tory councillors on their views of policies,

Mr Hague said his party had "ended the open door policy", when asked about the previous Tory pledges to cut net immigration figures to less than 100,000 people a year, which may not be met by the 2015 general election.

And he said: "Not much scares me after 26 years in politics, but we want to do what is the best thing for the country."
