Chinese embassy stops MPs from visiting Hong Kong

The Chinese embassy has told a group of MPs it will be stopped from making a planned trip to Hong Kong.

The visit was part of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee's investigation into relations between the UK and its former colony.

The decision comes after some of the worst scenes of unrest between protesters in Hong Kong and the police.

Richard Ottaway MP, the committee's chair, described the episode as "an affront to the free men and women of the world".
