Prince Charles on Lord Mountbatten's murder by the IRA

Prince Charles has spoken about the murder of his great-uncle, Lord Mountbatten, Lady Brabourne, his godson Nicholas Knatchbull and 15-year-old Paul Maxwell, in an IRA bomb attack in 1979.

He said "it seemed as if the foundations of all we held dear in life had been torn apart irreparably", but it made him "understand the agonies borne by so many others in these islands".

Prince Charles and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, are due to visit the village of Mullaghmore in County Sligo, where Lord Mountbatten was murdered.

The Prince of Wales will be the first senior member of the Royal Family to visit the scene of the attack.
