Owen Smith insists he can win after Labour court ruling

Labour leadership contender Owen Smith has stressed it is "not impossible" for him to beat rival Jeremy Corbyn after a High Court ruling that Labour members who were previously not entitled to vote for the party's leader to take part.

The ruling is thought likely to benefit leader Mr Corbyn over Mr Smith, adding more than 125,000 members to the party's electoral roll.

The party has been granted permission to appeal against the ruling, a move which shadow chancellor John McDonnell has said would "fly in the face of democracy".

Mr Smith refused to oppose such an appeal, saying: "It is not right for John or I to interfere."
