First tartan found on Roman emperor statue

Remnants of a statue which could depict the first representation of tartan have been found by a BBC Scotland documentary team.

The bronze statue of the emperor Caracalla contains a small figure of a Caledonian warrior wearing tartan trousers.

The design featured on the cloak of the notorious emperor who led military campaigns into Scotland in the third century.
