Mother: 'He was my flesh and blood'

A BBC Scotland investigation has found evidence of inconsistencies in the scandal over the disposal of the ashes of babies, with parents receiving ashes seemingly dependent on where they live.

In December 2011 it emerged that the remains of hundreds of babies had been secretly disposed of by staff at Edinburgh's Mortonhall crematorium, buried without the knowledge of their parents.

It seems the practice was not confined to the capital.

Carol Howden's four-month-old son John was cremated at Dunfermline Crematorium in 1988. She was devastated when she was told there would be no ashes.
