'Broken-hearted' Dundee misses out on City of Culture

Culture Secretary Maria Miller has announced that Hull will be UK City of Culture 2017.

Dundee, the only Scottish contender, missed out along with Leicester and Swansea Bay.

Stewart Murdoch, Dundee's bid director, told BBC Reporting Scotland's Andrew Anderson: "I'm delighted for Hull because I know what it will mean to them.

"There are a lot of people here who are broken-hearted that we don't have a chance to celebrate 2017."

The city on the Tay had been planning a £25m package of events if its bid had been successful, but much of that work will come to fruition.

Mr Murdoch said: "We're going to continue to put culture at the centre of the regeneration of the city."

Redevelopment of the city's waterfront in a £1bn project, that will establish the V&A on the waterfront, is already underway.
