New measures to make helicopter operations safer

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has announced new measures to improve the safety of offshore helicopter flights following a series of accidents in the North Sea.

The aviation safety regulator's report contains 32 recommendations. Helicopters will not be allowed to fly offshore in severe sea conditions and operators will be expected to use better flotation equipment.

Four people died in the most recent crash, in August 2013, when a Super Puma ditched off the Shetland Islands.
