No shale 'energy bonanza' for Scotland

New research by the British Geological Survey estimates there are 80 trillion cubic feet of shale gas and six billion barrels of oil in central Scotland.

Scientists have said the amount of gas and oil which could be commercially exploited is expected to be lower.

Anti-fracking campaigners have welcomed the news. Previous research by the BGS suggested there were 1,300 trillion cubic feet of gas in the Bowland shale in the north of England.

The UK energy minister Michael Fallon has said shale gas and oil reserves in central Scotland will not provide "an energy bonanza".
