Willie Rennie says stop and search needs a framework

The body representing rank and file police officers has accused politicians of "ignorance" over consensual stop and searches after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said senior police officers are considering ending the practice.

Calum Steele, general secretary of the Scottish Police Federation, told BBC Good Morning Scotland that searches increase public safety and police officers need "as many tools in the box to deliver expectations to the public".

Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie, whose party has said it will end the practice of consensual stop and searches, reiterated his belief in the need for a statutory framework where both police and citizens know their rights.

Mr Rennie said: "There's a clear difference between having accountability and having a proper framework ...searching is quite different from co-operating and that's why we need to have an accountability framework."
