Advice for climbers when lightning threatens

Do you know what you should do if you're caught in a lightning storm on exposed ground?

Thunder and lightning have struck much of the country in the past few days.

Two men are in hospital and two died after lightning strikes in the Brecon Beacons in Wales on Sunday.

Heather Morning, safety advisor for the Mountaineering Council of Scotland, external, has offered advice for climbers when there is a threat of thunder and lightning.

She said choose a route that avoids exposed ground on summits and ridge crests when lightning is forecast.

If a storm is approaching when you're out climbing you should: "Lose height as quickly as possible, so you're not the highest point, because lightning will take the shortest route to the earth."

What if you can't lose height? The advice is to "hunker down, sit on your rucksack and wait the storm out."
