Charles Jencks: How a cancer diagnosis inspired Maggie's Centres

Charles Jencks' wife Maggie was diagnosed with cancer in 1993 and had to digest the news in a bleak and airless corridor of an Edinburgh hospital.

Both resolved to build something better which led to the first Maggies' centre being built in Scotland three years later.

There are now 20 Maggie's Centres, external and a new book, "The Architecture of Hope", has been launched at the Edinburgh International Book Festival to mark the achievement.

BBC Scotland arts correspondent Pauline McLean caught up with Mr Jencks to hear how it all came about.
