New £3.5bn Shetland gas plant opens

Gas has begun coming ashore from a new £3.5bn plant in the Shetland Islands.

Shetland Gas Terminal, run by French company Total, is thought to supply about 8% of the UK's demand for gas.

Lying 125km (77 miles) north west of Shetland, the Laggan and Tormore fields will supply gas by pipeline to the plant which will then be fed into the national gas grid.

Despite a worldwide slump in oil prices, the plant has been the biggest construction project in the UK since the London Olympics.
